Creating a work of art…any kind of art…requires the following tools and supplies: time, your confidence, vulnerability, your soul, and your emotions bared for all to see.
So the idea of asking for someone else’s work, and putting your own work out there, is an exercise in courage. And this is the turf the sirens have chosen.
Art is too important not to share.

For episode 55 of Siren Soapbox, the sirens accepted a challenge from Aranza Reyes Lawson. She found a painted Siren Soapbox Rock, then reached out to us to introduce us to Artist Trading Cards.

Dear Sirens,
ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) are handmade trading cards (2.5 x 3.5 inches) that you trade with other artists. I don’t know about you guys but I don’t generally like sharing my art work (I’m not very good so that adds to it) because I’m worried about other people looking at it and judging it but I’ve really gotten into ATCs. There is even a website, atcsforall.com, where you can trade with other artists all over. It brought me out of my comfort zone and was a lot of fun! I just thought I’d let you know about it if you haven’t already heard of it =D
MTFBWYA,
Aranza Reyes Lawson
P.S. I’ve included some examples of ones I’ve made 🙂
We were super-excited to welcome Aranza onto our podcast, and we learned a lot from her! Not only did we learn about Artist Trading Cards, and about all of the ways exploring ATC pushed us out of our comfort zones, we also took away this nugget of wisdom:
It’s not as much about the art, it’s a lot about meeting different people and seeing how they see things!
Aranza Reyes Lawson
Through this experience, each of the sirens gained some wisdom:
If you don’t ask, the answer’s always, “no.” – Siren Mur
Creating the art was enough. – Siren TC
There’s a lot more to art besides being able to draw. – Siren Sara
Everybody, in some way, is an artist; you just have to find your medium. – Siren LC
Don’t tell me how to art! – Siren Jess
And here is the art we created:
And here are some cards we received:
